Therapeutic recreation offers purposeful interventions to enable clients  to achieve quality of life and optimal health through meaningful participation in recreation and leisure. Recreation therapists use a strengths based approach to support clients in having full access to and the freedom to choose recreation and leisure opportunities.

Some great achievements for Therapeutic Recreation in 2019/2020

Over 10,000 hours of individual interventions were offered in 2019/2020 with 996 clients participating. Recreation therapists provided individual interventions to meet client’s leisure goals and overcome barriers to participation in community based recreation. Fee for service programs included: taekwondo, let’s get active, active start, swim lessons, camps and expressive arts.
An Introduction to Parasport program was offered in partnership with Parasport Ontario, Blue Jays Challenger Baseball and the Abilities Centre thanks to a grant from the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Parasport program.
Let’s Get Active program for children 7- 18 yrs. with developmental disabilities including autism was offered in partnership with the City of Oshawa and Town of Ajax thanks to a grant from the Government of Ontario Sport and Recreation Communities Fund;
Actively participated in the FUSEDurham Local Poverty Reduction Fund through providing one to one support to clients attending summer camps and participation in the steering committee;
Therapeutic Recreation partnered with Ontario Tech University, The Town of Ajax, City of Oshawa, and the Abilities Centre to offer community-based programs.
